DBS

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been used in the US for over 20 years to provide relief from movement disorders including Parkinson's disease, Dystonia, and Essential Tremor. Recently, it was also approved by the FDA for treating epilepsy (seizures). DBS is a safe and effective therapy that is supported by several blinded, randomized clinical trials - the gold standard in medicine.

In a DBS procedure, a neurosurgeon inserts a thin wire into a precise location in the brain. The wire is then connected to a small pacemaker implanted below the collarbone. DBS is flexible and can be adjusted over time to fit a patient's symptoms. The procedure is reversible, minimally invasive, and does not involve any removal of brain tissue. Patients cannot "feel" the electrical stimulation of a DBS system, but the improvement in neurologic symptoms from DBS can be rapid and dramatic.
